This covenant memorializes the shared ministry between Wicomico Episcopal Church and Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church. The churches are self-managed and have their own tax identification numbers, vestries and budgets. Yet, both churches share similarities in context and culture while retaining their own distinctiveness.
Since their founding each church, under the umbrella of the Diocese of Virginia, has worked independently of each other. The plan for this Covenant is to work closely together in mission, worship, and outreach, under the leadership of a shared Rector.
The theological basis of this collaboration is strong. Both churches share not only the common worship and practice preserved in The Book of Common Prayer and the hymnody of the Church, ancient and modern, but also share in the Baptismal and Eucharistic ministry that comes to us through bishops in apostolic succession since Jesus’ sending of the apostles.
This covenant records the two churches’ understanding of their interdependence and the principles and agreements that enable them to have a collaboration that is energetic and vital. A clear understanding of the relationship and expectations between the congregations will increase the likelihood of a successful relationship between the churches and with the clergy who are called to minister to them.
By sharing the expenses of the Rector, and other clergy who may be called we are demonstrating good stewardship, wise management and the interdependence that has characterized Christianity since the time of the Apostles.
The term of the Covenant is January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028, with an opportunity for renewal.
